At the convention, I had a table for selling books. I thought the newest book, “The Junior Officer Bunkroom” would appeal because of the title matching the theme of Hook15: The Junior Officer. Well, a lot of people stopped by to talk and look at my five titles. The most popular title with everyone was “The Happy Life of Preston Katt.” The cover features an image of the type of World War II destroyer on which Preston served, and floating above the ship is an image of a nun. It seems everyone was drawn to the nun. I sold as many “Preston” as I did “JOB.” I should have put a nun on the cover of it too, I guess.
When I was a junior officer, the heavies used to say of us: “We buy them books, and they eat the covers … ” A mature sense of propriety precludes me from including the rest of what they said. So the other thing to consider is, if you don’t want to put a nun on the cover of your book, make the cover edible, like made from dark chocolate or infused with the aroma of bacon.
